Eligibility

Age
70 Years to 100 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Completely edentulous; wearing bimaxillary dentures; presence of the frailty phenotype (experimental group); abscence of cognitive problems and / or dementia; abscence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: History of stroke; signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders; cognitive deficit; uncontrolled systemic diseases.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Expected outcome 1. Reduced bite force in Frail Elderly compared to the elderly without this phenotype, measured by pressure sensors connected to a specific amplifier and software (Quantum X and Catman Easy, respectively), evaluated 2 months after adaptation with complete dentures.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Expected outcome 2. Frail elderly will have a poor perception of masticatory ability compared to the elderly without this phenotype. It will be measured by the 100mm visual analogue scale, inquiring the easeness or difficulty in chewing certain foods (Bread, hard cheese, lettuce, carrot, peanut, sausage and apple), evaluated 2 months after adaptation with complete dentures.;Expected outcome 3. Frail elderly will have a worse perception of oral health, compared to elderly without this phenotype. This data will be measured by the General Oral Health Index (GOHAI) which contains 12 questions with scores ranging from 1 to 3. The total score can range from 12 to 36, and the higher the score, the more positive is the self-perception of oral health. It is expected that elderly with fragility will have lower scores, evaluated 2 months after adaptation with complete dentures.;Expected outcome 4. Frail elderly will have a higher impact of oral conditions on quality of life, compared to the elderly without this phenotype. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-EDENT) will be used to measure such data. Scores can range from 0 to 76, where higher scores indicate a more negative impact. It is expected that the elderly with fragility will obtain the highest scores, evaluated 2 months after adaptation with complete dentures.;Expected outcome 5. Worse masticatory performance in Frail Elderly compared to the elderly without this phenotype, measured by sieving method (test material: Optocal), evaluated 2 months after adaptation with complete dentures.;Expected outcome 6. Reduced oral sensory function in Frail Elderly compared to the elderly without this phenotype, measured by the oral stereognosis test, evaluated 2 months after adaptation with complete dentures.
