Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: men with HIV; between 18 and 45 years of age; who have been on ART for at least 6 months; medical authorization to practice physical exercise; physically active for at least 1 month

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Individuals with any musculoskeletal limitation that prevents exercise; history of cardiovascular disease; use of illicit drugs; smokers; alcoholics; those who did not follow the evaluation recommendations

Expected outcome 1: To assess and compare the acute psychological responses of people living with HIV (PLWH) and healthy individuals following a single session of three different exercise protocols: low-volume high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE-LV), high-volume high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE-HV), and moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE). The psychological variables include: affective responses (Feeling Scale, from -5 to +5), perceived pleasure (7-point scale), and future intention to engage in exercise (0–100% scale). Assessments will be conducted before, during, and after each exercise session;Outcome found 1: A significant difference between groups was found only for the “pleasure” variable following the HIIE-HV protocol, with higher scores observed in the PLWH group (p = 0.031), indicating a more positive psychological response to this type of exercise. No significant differences were found between groups for affective responses or future exercise intention (FEI). During exercise, a time effect (p < 0.001) and a time × condition interaction (p = 0.003) were observed for affective responses, indicating increased affect over time in both groups. In the control group, HIIE-HV elicited significantly lower affective responses at specific time points compared to HIIE-LV and MICE. These findings suggest that healthy individuals may perceive differences in exercise intensities more distinctly than PLWH

Expected outcome 2: To compare ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) across the different exercise protocols (HIIE-LV, HIIE-HV, and MICE) throughout the sessions in both groups (PLWH and healthy controls). It is expected that, despite differences in RPE between protocols, affective responses will be similar among exercise types for PLWH, which may indicate greater tolerance and potential adherence to high-intensity interval training;Outcome found 2: Significant effects of time (p < 0.001), exercise method (p = 0.041), and time × method interaction (p < 0.001) were observed for RPE. In the PLWH group, the HIIE-HV protocol elicited significantly higher RPE scores across almost all stages when compared to HIIE-LV and MICE. Similar patterns were observed in the control group. Despite this, affective responses did not differ significantly between exercise methods within the PLWH group, supporting the hypothesis of possible tolerance and acceptability of high-intensity interval exercise among these individuals
