Interventions

This is a parallel two-arm, single-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial, with participants being blinded. The experimental group will include 24 autistic adults who will receive an intervention

Age
18 Years to 35 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: individuals of both gender between 18 full years and 35 years of age not yet completed with a prior clinical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, according to the criteria of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition; and who score 60 points or higher on the self-report version of the social responsiveness scale, second edition

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: illiterate individuals; having intellectual disability with a total intelligence quotient score less than or equal to seventy points assessed through the wechsler abbreviated intelligence scale; having any of the following current mental conditions identified by the structured clinical interview for the disorders of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition: current manic episode, current hypomanic episode, psychotic symptoms, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, or risk of suicide; having a moderate or severe depressive episode according to the hamilton depression scale of seventeen items with a score greater than or equal to eighteen points, or moderate or severe anxiety according to the hamilton anxiety scale of fourteen items with a score greater than or equal to eighteen points; participating in another psychotherapeutic intervention during the course of the study or, if receiving a psychopharmacological intervention, having any change in dose or medication within the three months prior to or during the course of the study; attending less than seventy-five percent of the intervention sessions or of the control sessions

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to find a degree of improvement in social responsiveness and autism spectrum symptoms measured by the self-report and informant-report versions of the Social Responsiveness Scale, second edition, and in social skills measured by the Social Skills Inventory, second edition, of Del Prette and Del Prette

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to find a degree of global clinical improvement after the intervention, as measured by the Clinical Global Impression scale; improvement in depressive symptoms on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale; improvement in anxiety symptoms on the 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale; improvement in executive functioning on the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale; and improvement in self-efficacy on the New General Self-Efficacy Scale
