Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Women 30 to 60 days postpartum who are in the waiting room of the ambulatory care and breastfeeding their child; residents of Natal, state of Rio Grande do Norte; without diagnosis of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, neoplasias, cardiopathies, diseases of the gastrointestinal and hepatic tract, syphilis, HIV positive; non-smokers and who had deliveries with a single concept and without malformation.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Women who do not have milk; illicit drug users who use vitamin E vitamin supplements.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
EExpected outcome: Increased alpha-tocopherol levels in maternal blood and milk following vitamin E supplementation. To determine the expected outcome, the amount of alpha-tocopherol in blood and breast milk will be assessed before and after supplementation. Statistical tools will be used to compare the two groups studied. Vitamin E supplementation is expected to contribute to the increase of this micronutrient in serum and mature milk of infants, based on the analysis of serum alpha-tocopherol and breast milk using the High Performance Liquid Chromatography technique (HPLC).

MeasureTime frame
Expected outcome: Maternal factors that may contribute to the increase of vitamin E in supplemented infants. For this finding it is necessary to evaluate the socioeconomic level of the mothers, diet and evaluation of circulating lipoproteins. To verify the expected outcome, statistical tools will be used to verify if such characteristics may influence the effect of vitamin E supplementation.
