Interventions

Resistance training (traditional and co-contraction). 60 older individuals will participate in this study. Participants will be divided into 4 groups. One group will perform traditional lower-body res
the second and the third group will perform co-contraction training for lower limbs for eight weeks - one group with non-active older, and other group with acive older
and finally a fourth group (control) will not perform any type of training, and will continue performing their activities normally for 8 weeks. Volunteers will be randomly grouped.

Age
60 Years to 80 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Healthy older; active or non active; aged between 60 to 80 years; available to participate in this research for eight weeks; non participant in any other physical exercise program during this period; all participants must sign an informed consent form.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Walking with an assistive device (cane, crutches, walker); presence of neurological disease; orthopedic impairment in the last 6 months in lower limbs (sprains, ligament ruptures, muscle injuries, fractures and surgeries); backache; vestibular impairment (presence of vertigo or labyrinthitis); non-corrective visual impairment by lenses; low score on the cognitive test.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To evaluate the ability to generate torque (force), determined by tests on the isokinetic dynamometer performed at the beginning and end of the study.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To analyze muscle thickness of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus, determined by an ultrasound, in which measurements will be performed at the beginning and end of the study.;To analyze the velocity, step length and width in the gait tests at preferred and maximum speed, which will be performed at the beginning and at the end of the study.;To evaluate the number of repetitions in the functional sit-and-stand test, which will be performed at the beginning and end of the study.;To analyze strength ratio between knee flexors and extensors, which will be measured by an isokinetic dynamometer test, at the beginning and at the end of the study.;To collect and analyze myoelectric activity of the vastus medialis, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscles, during a co-contraction session, which will be measured by a wireless electromyograph, at the beginning and end of the study.
