Age
No minimum to 90 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients of both sexes; age between 18 and 90 years; diagnosis of head and neck cancer; indication for radiotherapy treatment in the head and neck region; provision of written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Previous radiotherapy in the head and neck region; refusal to provide written informed consent; inability to attend the evaluations scheduled by the study

Expected outcome 1: It is expected to evaluate the influence of photobiomodulation therapy on the prevention and control of dysgeusia in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy by means of objective assessment of gustatory acuity and preservation of sweet, bitter, sour and salty tastes, evaluated before the start of radiotherapy, at the fifteenth radiotherapy session and at the thirtieth radiotherapy session;Outcome found 1: Changes in the perception of sweet, bitter, sour and salty tastes were observed over the course of radiotherapy in both groups, as assessed by an objective gustatory acuity test performed before the initiation of radiotherapy, at the fifteenth radiotherapy session and at the thirtieth radiotherapy session

Expected outcome 2: It is expected to evaluate the temporal evolution of the perception of sweet, bitter, sour and salty tastes in each treatment group during radiotherapy; to compare the preservation of gustatory function between participants receiving photobiomodulation therapy and those receiving zinc sulfate supplementation; to evaluate the association between participants' clinical and demographic characteristics and the occurrence of taste alterations during radiotherapy;Outcome found 2: A trend toward greater preservation of gustatory function for bitter, sour and salty tastes was observed among participants receiving photobiomodulation therapy compared with participants receiving zinc sulfate supplementation, particularly at the thirtieth radiotherapy session, although no statistically significant difference was observed after correction for multiple comparisons
