Eligibility

Age
60 Years to 90 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Elderly individuals aged between 60 and 90 years; clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus according to American Diabetes Association criteria for the experimental group; individuals without diabetes for the control group; ability to understand and agree with research procedures; ability to perform respiratory tests and blood collection; availability to attend the two scheduled in-person visits

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Active smoking or history of smoking greater than 10 pack-years; previous diagnosis of respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma; acute respiratory infection in the last four weeks; current use of immunosuppressive medications or systemic corticosteroids; presence of severe decompensated diseases that prevent the performance of the proposed tests

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to find differences in pulmonary function between elderly individuals with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus assessed by spirometry and impulse oscillometry considering forced vital capacity forced expiratory volume in the first second and airway resistance with data collected during a single evaluation at the scheduled visits

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to observe differences in blood markers related to systemic inflammation and oxidative stress including high sensitivity C reactive protein interleukins and markers of oxidative damage comparing elderly individuals with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus with data collected at a single time point during the scheduled visits
