Eligibility

Age
18 Years to 40 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Be between 18 and 40 years of age; Have undergone pure tone audiometry and otoacoustic emissions testing prior to recreational noise exposure, carnival; Have completed the ear audit questionnaire and the digits in noise test prior to recreational noise exposure, carnival; Present no evidence of middle ear abnormalities or external auditory canal obstruction, like excessive cerumen during the pre exposure audiological assessment and administration of study instruments; Attend carnival events involving recreational noise exposure during the month of February, for both the Intervention Group and the Control Group

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Individuals younger than 18 years or older than 40 years of age; Failure to complete any of the baseline assessments prior to recreational noise exposure, including pure tone audiometry, otoacoustic emissions testing, the ear audit questionnaire, or the digits in noise test; Presence of middle ear abnormalities, external auditory canal obstruction, like excessive cerumen, or any condition preventing the completion of audiological assessments at baseline; History of diagnosed hearing loss, chronic tinnitus, chronic middle ear disease, otologic surgery, or other known auditory disorders that may influence study outcomes Occupational exposure to hazardous noise levels or exposure to intense non-recreational noise during the study period; Use of ototoxic medications at the time of data collection; Failure to attend the carnival event or withdrawal from participation before completion of the post-exposure assessments; Incomplete data collection or inability to complete the post-exposure audiological assessments and study questionnaires; Refusal or inability to provide informed consent.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
We expect the group of volunteers exposed to recreational noise who used hearing protectors to exhibit less or no temporary shift in their auditory threshold compared to the group that did not use hearing protectors

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
We expect that volunteers exposed to recreational noise who used hearing protection will report no auditory complaints or fewer complaints than the group that did not use protection. Symptoms include, for example, tinnitus, a sensation of fullness in the ear, hypersensitivity to sounds, difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, and a subjective perception of hearing changes
