Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Male participants aged between 20 and 40 years. Volunteers must be active cyclists who perform training sessions at least three times per week, totaling a minimum of 8 hours of weekly cycling sessions. Additionally, they must have at least two years of practical experience in training and competitions within the modality. All participants must be free of pre-existing comorbidities and must sign the Informed Consent Form (ICF) prior to the performance of any study procedures.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Individuals who regularly use tobacco (smokers) or who have sustained any type of musculoskeletal injury within the 40 days prior to the start of testing. Additionally, participants presenting clinical contraindications for maximal physical exertion or those who fail to fully comply with the supplementation protocol and the established washout requirements will be excluded.

It is expected to find a significant improvement in skeletal muscle oxidative capacity, assessed by the recovery constant of the metabolic rate of oxygen (mVO2) after short-duration exercise, following acute beetroot juice supplementation compared to placebo. Additionally, it is expected to observe changes in the muscle oxygen extraction reserve (REM), measured by the range between the highest deoxyhemoglobin (HHb) value in the incremental test and the plateau obtained during a total arterial occlusion of approximately 2 minutes post-exercise. These parameters were fundamental for determining the sample size and the effects of the intervention

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
It is expected to observe changes in cardiorespiratory variables, such as maximum oxygen consumption VO2max and maximum heart rate HRmax, obtained during a maximal incremental cycling test. Furthermore, it is expected to find improvements in neuromuscular performance, assessed using parameters derived from the Torque-Cadence and Power-Cadence relationships during maximal cycling sprints. Autonomic modulation will be evaluated by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) using the SD1 and SD2 indices of the Poincaré plot at rest and post-exercise. Finally, it is expected to observe metabolic and perceptual responses by measuring blood lactate concentration [La] and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) using the Borg scale from 6 to 20
