60 Years to 75 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Elderly who live in Brasilia; age between 60 and 75 years old; both sexes; elderly who accept to participate in the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Elderly with excessive ingestion of alcoholic beverages; smokers; who use drugs that can block the reduction of nitrate and nitrite to nitric oxide (sexual hormones, antacids, proton pump inhibitors, xanthine oxidase inhibitors); drugs that can enhance nitric oxide effects (phosphodiesterase inhibitors); treatment with anticoagulants and immunosuppressive drugs; elderly who can not exercise; with malignant diseases; vegetarian; who do not like or who are advised to not consume green vegetables; who use mouthwashs; who use antibiotics until 7 days before the beginning of the study

Expected Outcome 1 - Six-minute walk test: Increase in walking distance (in meters) after the nitrate-rich diet period, assessed using the six-minute walk test, based on the detection of a variation between intervention and baseline periods with a p-value < 0.05.;Observed Outcome 1 - Six-minute walk test: A significant increase in walking distance in the six-minute walk test was observed after the nitrate-rich diet period (p < 0.001).;Expected Outcome 2 - Serum total antioxidant capacity (sTAC / FRAP): Serum total antioxidant capacity (sTAC), assessed using the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) assay, expressed in µmol/L, measured before and after each 7-day dietary intervention period, based on the detection of a variation between intervention and baseline periods with a p-value < 0.05. This outcome constitutes the primary outcome of the biochemical axis of this clinical trial and served as the basis for the sample size calculation for biochemical analyses. An amendment was submitted prior to manuscript submission to correct an administrative omission in the original trial registration.;Observed Outcome 2 - Serum total antioxidant capacity (sTAC / FRAP): For serum total antioxidant capacity (sTAC), no significant difference was observed between the nitrate-rich and nitrate-poor interventions; however, both showed a significant increase compared with baseline (p < 0.02).
