Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age 1 to 59 months inclusive • Admitted to hospital with an acute medical illness • Resident in the hospital catchment area • Resident in the study follow up hospital catchment area defined for each hospital • Scores above the inclusion threshold in the computer-calculated score derived from screening • Both the child and the family have not previously been enrolled in this study • Provides written informed consent for use of data and follow up

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: . Surgical or specialty unit admission • Planned admission • Previously enrolled in this trial • A sibling has been enrolled • Terminal illness that is expected to cause death within 6 months • A family of a child who was potentially eligible, but who has died prior to enrolment

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
This is a Proof of Principle trial based on implementation science. Primary outcome is intervention feasibility. After this initial phase, a larger trial covering large sample size will be designed with mortality as the primary end point.
