Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Parturients at term (=37 weeks) who present in labour 2. Parturients with cervical dilatation between 4 to 7 cm and with ruptured membranes 3. Parturients with a singleton fetus in cephalic presentation

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Parturients with a history of cervical surgery, cervical incompetence or stenosis 2. Prolonged rupture of membranes in the index pregnancy 3. Preterm labour 4. Multiple gestation 5. Antepartum haemorrhage 6. Fetal congenital anomalies 7. Intrauterine fetal demise.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The mean duration of active phase labour in minutes for both the intervention and control groups respectively

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- Mode of delivery, cervical laceration, mean birth weight, mean Apgar score at 5 minutes, need for newborn resuscitation or admission into the neonatal intensive care unit, and level of maternal satisfaction among the intervention and control groups.
