Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Repeating undergraduate students at the University of Zambia Ridgeway Campus, aged 18 years or older, with clinically relevant depressive symptoms (BDI score =10), who provided informed consent to participate in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Students participating in another depression intervention study, those with depression secondary to other medical or psychiatric conditions, and individuals with very severe depressive symptoms (BDI >40) requiring immediate clinical management.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Pre-intervention (baseline): depressive symptoms were assessed prior to the initiation of the MoodGYM programme (week 0), before any exposure to the intervention. During intervention: the intervention period spanned from week 0 to week 8, during which participants in the intervention group engaged with the MoodGYM programme, with adherence monitoring and check-ins conducted at weeks 1, 3, and 6. Post-intervention (endline): depressive symptoms were reassessed at week 8 following completion of the intervention period, allowing for evaluation of changes in depressive symptom severity between baseline and post-intervention.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary outcomes included within-group changes in depressive symptom scores over time, differences in depression severity categories (e.g., mild, moderate, severe), and the level of participant adherence to the MoodGYM intervention (e.g., frequency of use and module completion) in relation to changes in depressive symptoms.
