Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Eligible participants were: - aged 18-65 years, - diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the previous 6 months (ADA criteria: HbA1c =6.5% or fasting blood glucose =7.0 mmol/L), - residents of Yaoundé, - had a BMI =25 kg/m² (or normal weight if motivated), and - provided informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - diabetic ketoacidosis or ketosis, - severe renal impairment, - unstable cardiovascular disease, - pregnancy or breastfeeding, - eating disorders, - long-term corticosteroid or immunosuppressive therapy, - participation in another trial, - diabetes with renal complications, and - incomplete questionnaires or dropout.
