Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Students aged 14-19 years. Participants will be adolescents aged 14-19 years, which covers the age range where suicide is the second leading cause of death in both girls and boys.3 Secondly, this age bracket cognitively is developmentally appropriate for a culturally sensitive topic that touches on suicide, which requires the ability for abstract reasoning and moral conceptualization, capacities essential for engaging in complex constructs such as suicide literacy and attitudinal disposition. Consequently, participants are expected to meaningfully engage with the psycho-educational content and reliably complete the study instruments. 2. Students in the SS1 to SS3. Students in these classes are part of the Senior Secondary School (SSS) system. According to the school grade system in Nigeria, Junior Secondary School (JSS) accommodates students aged 13 to 16 years. In recent years, enrollments in JSS and SS classes have begun much earlier. Consequently, JSS classes were excluded based on cognitive maturity. Additionally, only in-school adolescents aged 14-19 years will be included in the study. 3. Students minors who would assent to participate in the study with parental or guardian consent obtained. 4. Students who are legal adults who would consent to participate in the study, independently.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Any student who might be absent during the study period, as evidenced by the attendance required to be signed at the end of each session. 2. Students who might be unwilling to comply with the study procedure. 3. Students who show elevated distress upon pre-assessment screening using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) 4. Special education needs students who may not be able to comprehend the content of the intervention materials or give appropriate responses to the instruments. Identification will rely on existing school records and guidance counsellors’ reports; excluded students will continue to receive routine school support services. This approach is protective and discriminatory, as suicide is a very sensitive topic, capable of leading to re-traumatization.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcome is the suicide literacy scores post the psycho-educational intervention. This will be measured using the Suicide Knowledge Questionnaire, which will be compared within the intervention arm at baseline, immediate post-test, and 12-week follow-up, and between the intervention and control arms at baseline, immediate post-test, and 12-week follow-up.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The secondary outcome is the attitudes towards suicide scores post the psycho-educational intervention. This will be measured using the Attitudes towards Suicide Scale, which will be compared within the intervention arm at baseline, immediate post-test, and 12-week follow-up, and between the intervention and control arms at baseline, immediate post-test, and 12-week follow-up.
