Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age = 18 years. ICU admission without respiratory tract infection. ICU patients without any symptoms or signs of sepsis. Medical or surgical patients in need for invasive mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours. Hemodynamically stable at enrollment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients not on invasive mechanical ventilation. Patients with high sepsis markers (total leukocyte count (TLC), C--Reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT)). Pre-existing pneumonia at the time of intubation (clinical or radiological evidence). Patients admitted with lung pathology (Interstitial lung disease, lung mass, or pleural effusion). Known allergy or hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or ß-lactam antibiotics. Sever renal impairment requiring dialysis. Pregnancy or lactation.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) during the 1st 14 days of mechanical ventilation.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Time to VAP onset (if it occurs). Duration of mechanical ventilation. ICU length of stay. 28-day all-cause mortality. Emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Adverse events related to nebulization (bronchospasm, allergy, desaturation). Changes in pulmonary IL-6 in each group. The relationship between cytokine concentrations and VAP development.
