Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status grade I, II and III. 2. Age between 30 and 60 years. 3. Both sexes. 4. Elective lumbar spine surgeries expected to last more than 2 h.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patient refusal. 2. Psychiatric diseases. 3. Body Mass Index > 35 Kg/m2. 4. Previous intrathoracic procedures. 5. History of very severe obstructive pulmonary disease (forced expiratory volume in 1 s 40 mmHg) 7. Pregnancy.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Lung ultrasonography score (LUS score) between groups at the end of surgery (just before emergence) as a lower LUS indicates better lung aeration.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Lung ultrasonography score (LUS score) between groups post induction, post first recruitment and at the PACU.;Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, ETCO2, arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), PaO2/FiO2, peak inspiratory pressure and plateau pressure.;PPCs within the first 3 postoperative days (pneumothorax, pleural effusion, pulmonary collapse, atelectasis, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), or pulmonary aspiration).
