Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients with age ranging from 18 to 60 years American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status class I or II who were planned for single level lumbar laminectomy

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with body mass index >30 kg/m2, previous lumbar spine surgery, history of allergic reaction to pethidine or local anaesthetics, or history of opioid or substance abuse were excluded from the study

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1- Total postoperative analgesic consumption in mg tramadol during the first postoeprative 48-hours tramadol consumption 2- time in hours for the first postoperative rescue analgesia intravenous tramadol

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Time of ambulation, adverse effects (hypotension, vomiting, urinary retention and pruritis), average VAS score in the first postoperative 24 h (= mean of scores at 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 h) and average VAS score 24 to 48 h postoperative (= mean of scores at 28, 32, 36, 40, 44 and 48 h).
