Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: age 18 years pathological obesity (BMI 35 kg/m2 with concomitant comorbidities or BMI 40 kg/m2). All patients enrolled are those who fail supervised diet and exercise programs for weight loss. Inclusion is restricted to patients who will undergo a primary laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: patients with history of prior gastric or esophageal surgery, patients with preoperative severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or Barrett’s esophagus. Patients with high-risk cardiopulmonary diseases, Patients with uncontrolled psychiatric disorders, or substance abuse, Patients with untreated palliative cancer will also be excluded. In addition, patients with repeat LSG will be excluded from the study. To avoid confounding the results, patients with any antecedent causes of nausea and vomiting will also be excluded from the study.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Determining the incidence of PONV after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy by using the Rhodes Index of Nausea and Vomiting that will be filled out by the patient at 12 and 24 hours postoperatively among the four different study groups.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Determining the difference of the hospital stay among the 4 different study groups.
