Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. Case-patients are eligible for enrollment if they present to one of the already established diarrhoeal surveillance sites for treatment of a diarrhoeal illness defined as the occurrence of >3 episodes of diarrhoea (stools of a less formed character than usual) within a 24-hour period, less than 7 days prior to hospital visit, that is not explained by an underlying medical condition. 2. Children with chronic diseases such as hepatic, renal, or autoimmune disorders will also be included in the study. 3. Less than 5 years of age 4. Produce stool sample during the first 48 hours after presentation and are either: Treated with oral or intravenous fluids at the Emergency Department and discharged home; or admitted to the hospital and treated with oral rehydration or intravenous fluids. 5. Parental ability and willingness to provide written informed consent.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Children older than 5 years of age 2. Patients unable to contact parent/caregiver or guardian to obtain informed consent. 3. Admitted to another hospital for >24 hours (and subsequently transferred to the current hospital). 4. Any condition which in the opinion of the investigator, might jeopardize the safety of study participants or interfere with the evaluation of the study objectives.
