Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: geriatric patients aged 60 years or older both genders scheduled for elective major non-cardiac surgeries (including orthopedic, urologic, and abdominal surgeries) with an American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status I or II

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: refusal of participation impairment of vision, cognition, or speech neuropsychiatric disease (e.g., dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or cerebrovascular accidents) cardiac dysfunction (i.e., preoperative heart rate <45 beats/minute, any degree of heart block, or sick sinus syndrome) renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy severe liver impairment (Child–Pugh grade C) bleeding disorder emergency surgery intake of antihypertensive medication (such as alpha-methyldopa, clonidine, or other alpha2-adrenergic agonists) cardiac or any emergency surgeries history of allergy to dexmedetomidine
