Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Pregnant women aged 18 years and above. Pregnancy with fetus at gestational age of 28 weeks and above. Women that require pharmacological blood pressure control for severe hypertension. Pregnant women who can willingly ingest oral medications. They consented to the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Women who are unwilling or unable to give consent. Women who are actively wheezing or asthmatic Known heart disease patients. Diabetes mellitus. Symptoms and Signs suggestive of heart disease

MeasureTime frame
To compare the efficacy of oral labetalol versus nifedipine retard in the optimal control of blood pressure (BP) in women with severe hypertension in pregnancy at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To determine and compare the mean blood pressure control, number of hours to achieve optimal control of BP and/or need for use of additional drugs, the effect of coadministration of both classes of oral antihypertensives in recalcitrant cases and the adverse outcomes experienced in each group.
