Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: For the Vitamin A banana bioefficacy trial: ? 6-14yrs of age ? No underlying medical conditions ? Not pregnant ? Not having received vitamin A supplementation within the last 6 months prior to the study For the Effect of Inflammation on vitamin A absorption of total body stores: ? 6-14yrs of age ? Not having received vitamin A supplementation within the last 6 months prior to the study ? No underlying medical conditions ? Not pregnant ? Inflamed (C-reactive protein = 5 mg/L, n=55 children or With Malaria) ? Or not-inflamed (C-reactive protein < 5 mg/L, n=55 children or negative for Malaria and any other common form of inflammation)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: For the Vitamin A rich banana bioefficacy trial: ? Fever (body temperature >37.5 °C) ? C-reactive protein > 5 mg/L ? Diarrhoea within past one week ? Severe anaemia (Hb < 70 g/dl) ? Symptoms of night blindness ? Clinical symptoms of xerophthalmia ? Chronic disease ? Not able to comply with study procedures during the run-in phase (missing 3 or more feeding sessions, or not able to consume 80% or more of the age-specific amount of banana) For the Effect on Inflammation on vitamin A absorption and total body stores: ? Diarrhoea within past one week ? Severe anaemia (Hb < 70 g/dl) ? Severe Malaria ? Chronic disease ? Any portion of the stomach or the intestine removed (aside from the appendix)
