Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Primary outcome was the postpartum stress level. The Hung postpartum stress scale was used. It has three subscales, the maternal role attainment, negative body changes and lack of social support each having 32, 13 and 17 questions respectively. The questions in each subscale were answered in scale of one to five, one being not at all and five being always. The scale along with its subscales were found to be reliable and valid elsewhere. In this study, the internal consistency for maternal role attainment (Cronbach’s alpha= 0.93), negative body changes (Cronbach’s alpha= 0.84), lack of social support (Cronbach’s alpha= 0.85) and the whole scale (Cronbach’s alpha= 0.91) was acceptable. Similar with the other questionnaire, the higher the score in each subscale conveyed the notion that higher postpartum stress was experienced.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Socio health variables were the secondary out come. It consisted of i. Maternal and baby health status: It consists of mainly five questions: presence of maternal physical problems, baby’s illness, method of breast feeding, baby’s behaviour and presence of any major life event to the mother in the last six weeks of postpartum period. ii. The Marriage adjustment test (MAT) scale: It is a 13-item scale that measures marital satisfaction. It is used to assess the level of adjustment of participants to their married life. Studies have indicated that marital adjustment has an effect on the postpartum stress level of mothers. iii. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS): It is a brief research tool designed to measure perceptions of support from 3 sources: family, friends, and a significant other
