Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Participants are eligible to participate if they are: - admitted to ICU for longer than 24hours - older that 18 years of age -underwent open abdominal surgery - able to follow instructions - able to score at least three out of five on the Standardized Five Questions (S5Q) test - ready to mobilise out of bed on day one post-operatively.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Patients excluded are presenting with: - unstable cardiac function such as myocardial ischaemia or pulmonary emboli, - undergoing continuous dialysis therapy, - presenting with an amputation affecting functional performance - any current or history of neurological disease.
