Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Aged >18 years.Able and willing to provide written informed consent. For FT and ET patients:Diagnosis of FT or ET confirmed by a movement disorder specialist according to established criteria. No contraindications for MRI scanning. For healthy participants:No history of movement disorders, significant neurological or psychiatric comorbidtyNo contraindications for MRI scanning.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Participants will be excluded if they meet any of the following criteria:Presence of implanted metal devices, pacemakers, or other contraindications for MRI scanning.Severe claustrophobia.Pregnancy (confirmed by self-report).Inability to comply with study procedures. For FT and ET participants:Presence of another significant neurological disorder that could interfere with study outcomes. For healthy participants:History of a movement disorder or significant neurological comorbidity (e.g., major stroke, multiple sclerosis).A first degree relative with essential tremor.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| To quantify interrater agreement and misdiagnosis rates between functional tremor (FT) and essential tremor (ET) based on the evaluation of standardized video-recorded examinations, clinical histories, and clinical test results by general neurologists and movement disorder specialists. To identify differences in functional brain organisation and functional connectivity patterns between FT, ET, and healthy participants (HP) using task-based and resting-state functional MRI (fMRI). | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| To assess the influence of subspecialisation level (general neurologists versus movement disorder specialists) on diagnostic accuracyTo examine the relationship between tremor severity and functional brain activity patternsTo develop and evaluate machine learning models for distinguishing FT, ET, and HP based on neuroimaging data | — |
