Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Clinical diagnosis of COPD as defined by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines, including a forced spirometry showing the presence of a post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio = 0.7.Aged 45 years and older.A smoking history of at least 10 pack-years.At least one documented or self-reported exacerbation in the past three years, with the restriction that the last exacerbation had ended at least four weeks before inclusion and symptoms had returned to patient’s baseline level.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Any condition that prevents the proper collection of exhaled breath samples and/or completion of the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ).

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary objective is to investigate differences in levels of previously reported exhaled VOCs between the stable phase and pulmonary exacerbations in COPD patients.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To validate the presence and characterise the distribution of previously reported VOCs during the stable phase; to explore associations between exhaled VOC levels and symptom severity, as measured by the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CAT); and to examine potential relationships between VOC profiles and baseline clinical parameters such as age, sex, GOLD stage, smoking history, medication use and recent food intake.
