Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: In order to be eligible to participate in this study, a participant must meet all of the following criteria: - Age: 18 years or older - Sufficient proficiency in either Dutch or English, both written and spoken, to understand study materials and follow instructions during the study Patient group specific criteria: - Meet DSM-V criteria for bipolar disorder I based on patient file and confirmed by their primary caregiver, either a certified psychologist or psychiatrist.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: A potential participant who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study: Criteria that might interfere with autonomic or cardiovascular responses - Known cardiovascular disease or current use of cardiovascular medication, including but not limited to beta-blockers - Current or suspected pregnancy as self-reported by the participant - Participants used drugs or alcohol 12h prior to the experiment - Participant drank, ate or smoke/vaped 2 hours prior to the experiment Group variables - Participants with acute manic or depressed mood (as determined by their mental health professional) - Advanced experience with VR - Self-reported fear of heights - For non-patient participants: first-degree relative with history of bipolar disorder

Specifially, change in affect (measured with VAS-scales) and physiology (heart rate variability and blood pressure) at four timepoints, namely at baseline, after instruction (anticipation phase), after the VR-task (activation), and in rest (recovery) will be measured. | — |
