Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age 18 years or olderIn treatment at a tertiary mental health center (University Centre of Psychiatry)Whose current psychological distress is related to early life experiences as indicated by a clinicianA score of >3 on 1 of 3 schema modes (demanding parent, punitive parent, and/or vulnerable child) as measured by the Schema Mode Inventory (SMI)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Insufficient command of the Dutch languagePrimary diagnosis of substance use disorder or organic brain disease (such as dementia)Unable to provide informed consent

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Feasibility, acceptability and usefulness will be monitored through number of screened and enrolled patients per month, total number of adverse events, as well as patients qualitative first experiences, feedback, perceived usefulness, added value, and attitude towards the VR schema therapy exercises.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Difference scores on schema modes, affect, self-criticism, self-compassion and self-esteem. Furthermore, mental imagery ability will be explored as a possible moderator of preliminary treatment effect (e.g., whether people with less mental imagery abilities experiences a stronger treatment effect). Other measures include schemas, age, gender, education, working status, living situation, (DSM-5) diagnosis, illness duration (years/months), previous psychological treatment (type, frequency, duration), and current medication (type, dosage).
