Interventions

During the intervention phase, participants receive 10 x 90 min. sessions EMDR-therapy over a period of five weeks (on average two sessions per week) aimed at non-PTSD trauma as an add-on intervention

Age
18 Years to 99 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: PD diagnosis according to DSM-5 criteria;AUD diagnosis according to DSM-5 criteria;Active, regular outpatient AUD/SUD treatment, expected to last at least until the follow-up assessment;  At least partial control over substance use. That is, participants can attend sessions sober;Age 18 years or older;Written informed consent. 

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: PTSD diagnosis according to DSM-5 criteria;Inadequate proficiency in the Dutch language;Factors that (also) interfere with regular addiction care such as a psychiatric crisis due to acute or severe suicidality or a florid psychotic state, or aggressive behavior or cognitive problems that prohibit a clear understanding of instructions of interfere with adequate assessments.

Feasibility: indicators of safety, treatment compliance, acceptability and adoption of the EMDR-therapy approach; 

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Proof-of-concept: changes in level of personality functioning and symptoms, general wellbeing, substance use and craving from T0-T2.
