Age
18 Years to 99 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: In order to be eligible to participate in this study, a subject must meet all of the following criteria: • Aged =18 years; • Clinically confirmed heart failure according to the 2021 ESC HF guidelines, independent of aetiology; • Able to understand the procedures and are willing to provide informed consent; • Able to speak, read and write Dutch in order to be able to fill in the questionnaires.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: A potential subject who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study: • Patients younger than 18 years of age. • Inability to follow instructions or comply with follow-up procedures • A known bacterial infection at the inclusion time

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Establish the prevalence of reduced iron intake and increased gastrointestinal iron loss in patients with HF in relation to ID.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
To characterize the relationship between gut microbiome composition and the prevalence of ID, iron intake and iron loss. • To examine associates of gut microbiome composition in iron deficient heart failure patients. • To compare differences in aetiologies underlying ID in anaemic and non-anaemic HF patients. • To compare the prevalence of reduced iron intake and faecal occult blood loss in HF patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), reduced (HFrEF) and mid-ranged (HFmrEF) and compare between those with ID versus those without ID. • To explore the prevalence of other micronutrient deficiencies in relation to iron deficiency in patients with HF • To assess micronutrient loss in urine and fecal samples in relation to circulating levels of micronutrients and urine
