Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Aged 40 years and older, both male and female Former elite rower, defined as at least 10 years of participation at a high national, international, or Olympic level of rowing Participating in ELITE-ROW-screening
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Unable to give informed consent Any evidence of a heritable connective tissue disorder associated with thoracic aortic disease, such as Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome or other genetically confirmed forms of familial thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (FTAAD). Participants with a family history of a known pathogenic variant of a connective tissue disorder who have undergone genetic testing and are confirmed not to carry the familial mutation will not be excluded
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Investigate the prevalence of aortic mortality, surgery, and pathology, in former national, international or Olympic rowers who participated between 1964 and 1984Determine the prevalence of aortic dilatation in former elite rowers with at least 10 years of competition at the national, international, or Olympic levelEvaluate aortic MRI-derived properties (3D aortic displacement, OSI, and PWV) in former elite rowers with versus without aortic dilatationEvaluate aortic MRI-derived properties (3D aortic displacement, OSI, and PWV) in former elite rowers with dilated aortas versus patients with pathological Marfan aortas | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Identify rower characteristics associated with aortic dilatationAssess levels of uncertainty intolerance of, optimism, and health anxiety in former elite rowers with a dilated aortaInvestigate coping strategies of former elite rowers to manage health-related uncertaintiesIdentify factors associated with high uncertainty intolerance in former elite rowers with a dilated aorta | — |
