Age
16 Years to 64 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: -          Between 16 and 21 years of age -          Native speaker of Dutch -          Average or above-average IQ (>=85)  -          Normal or corrected-to-normal vision and normal hearing. Additional inclusion criteria for participants with autism:  -           DSM-V TR classification of autism spectrum disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2022) obtained from a clinical professional. 

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Presence of physical disabilities, severe medical conditions, risk of seizures (e.g., epilepsy), (acquired) brain injury, active use of sedatives, anti-depressants or anti-epileptic drugs

MeasureTime frame
In five experiments, this project will compare several neural and behavioral markers for speech perception and language acquisition between autistic and non-autistic adolescents and young adults. Experiment 1 aims to investigate whether the reason why autistic people typically benefit less from visual input when perceiving speech in suboptimal listening conditions is related to a decreased ability to synchronize neural activity to audiovisual speech signals. Experiment 2 aims to examine if response planning during conversations is different between autistic and non-autistic people. Experiment 3 aims to examine whether the ability to adapt to changes in speech rate differs between autistic and non-autistic people. Experiment 4 aims to examine whether the ability to detect patterns in linguistic input, crucial for language acquisition, differs  between autistic and non-autistic people. Experiment 5 aims to examine if differences in attention processes might account for the differential effects of autism on language acquisition.

In Experiment 1-3 we will examine whether individual differences in speech processing can be linked to differences in resting state activity.
