18 Years to 99 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: adults =18 years, alcohol-related ED visit, Dutch or English speaking, permission for the telephone call, available by telephone

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Not available by telephone, no permission for the telephone intervention, not English or Dutch speaking, serious cognitive or auditive impairment, current treatment in addiction care, severe medical condition, acute psychiatric crisis

Effectiveness of the implementation: •  The number and percentage of patients with an alcohol-related ED visit who are registered for a telephone follow-up call. •  Reasons why patients were not approached or did not give permission for a telephone follow-up call. •  Differences in patient characteristics and characteristics of their ED visit between patients who were and were not registered for a telephone follow-up call. •  The number and percentage of registered patients who are reached by the specialist nurse for a telephone follow-up call. •  The number and percentage of patients who, based on the follow-up consultation, have an indication for or wish further treatment or guidance.

Experiences of patients and ED staff regarding the implementation: • The patients' experiences regarding the ED visit, the invitation for the telephone follow-up call and the telephone conversation itself. • Experiences and support of ED staff regarding the project and regarding other interventions for hazardous alcohol consumption, which are initiated from the ED. • Stimulating factors and barriers of the project that patients and ED staff experience. • The average duration of a telephone follow-up calls in minutes (with range) • The average amount of time that the nurse spends on the telephone follow-up calls per week.
