Age
18 Years to 99 Years
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: - Age > 18 years - Acceptable proficiency of the Dutch language - 37 patients - ASA 2-4 patients, in order to limit the influence of co-morbidities on the mitochondrial function. - Cardiac surgery requiring CPB
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: - Presence of mitochondrial disease - Pregnancy/ lactation - emergency surgery, - patients with intracardiac shunts

| - The mitoPO2 and mitoVO2 will be measured perioperatively. The mitoPO2 can be measured continuously with the COMET and will be defined in mmHg. For the mitoVO2 measurements, the local mitochondrial oxygen supply will be blocked by pressure on the skin. The mitoVO2 are then determined by the on-going oxygen usage inside the mitochondria over time. The mitoVO2 is defined as decline in the mitoPO2 over time; mmHg/s. - The tissue oxygen saturation is measured by the INVOSTM and is defined in percentage (%). | — |

| - Haematocrit is measured by standard care blood samples before, during and after CPB and is defined in volume percentage of the red blood cells in blood (vol%) - Throughout the operation and the first 24 hours on the ICU standard hemodynamic parameters, such as blood pressure (mmHg), heart rate (bpm), oxygen saturation (%), end tidal CO2 (kPa), temperture (Celsius) are measured and record every minute during the operation and every 15 minutes on the ICU. | — |
