Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) Official DSM-IV-TR AS-I diagnosis of substance abuse disorder (141) or substance dependency 2) Ability to give informed consent 3) No acute psychosis 4) No acquired/congenital brain impairments, such as epilepsy 5) No signifcant visual or auditive impairments, IQ >80 6) Able to understand, speak, read and write the dutch language sufficiently 7) Able and willing to comply to research requirements, such as attending appointments, being able to sit relatively still for 60 minutes

The main study parameter of this study will be impulsivity as measured by the BIS-11 and a Cued Go-NoGo task, and changes in resting-state EEG-pattern. Secondary study parameters will be scores on a self-report craving questionnaire (DAQ), and a treatment evaluation questionnaire (IFTE).

Another study parameter will be the IFTE. The IFTE is an observational checklist of forensic risk behaviours measured using all 14 dynamic risk items of the HKT-R, three skills items which were derived from the Atascadero Skills Profile (Vess, 2001) and five items which were formulated in collaboration with forensic professionals. The IFTE has a total of 22 items, such as impulsivity, skills to prevent drug use, coping skills and overall functioning, and therefore measures the risk for recidivism indirectly, as these items are all related to recidivism (De Vries & Spreen, 2012). Independent of each other the IFTE is scored by the members of the team of therapists involved in an individual forensic patient*s treatment before the treatment evaluation meeting. IFTE-items are scored using a 17-point scale with 5 fixed anchor points (Schuringa, Spreen & Bogaerts, submitted). 8.1.3. Other study parameters Other study parameters will include urine analysis to control for possible drug use before, during and after the duration of the neurofeedback intervention. As urine analysis is part of the compulsory treatment obligations in an inpatient forensic psychiatric treatment facility, this will not be an additional burden induced by participation in the study. Number of urine samples collected will be counted, as will be positive (meaning drug-use in the period of time since last drug test) and negative (meaning no drug-use since last testing) outcome scores. Demographic parameters: File information on each participant will be collected. This includes parameters such as age, nationality, diagnosis, duration of treatment and kind of crime committed.
