2 Years to 17 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: TBI patients will be included if they (1) have parental written informed consent, (2) provide written informed consent if aged over 11 years, (3) are Dutch speaking, (4) have suffered from mild to severe TBI (closed head injury) and (5) are aged between 6-12 years. Orthopaedic Control patients will be included if they (1) have parental written informed consent, (2) provide written consent if aged over 11 years, (3) are Dutch speaking, (4) have suffered an orthopaedic injury, (5) have no history of TBI (6) and are aged between 6-12 years.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: See protocol page 14. The following exclusion criteria will be applied: (1) disorders of the visual system such as agnosia, hemianopsia and visual inattention,(2) disorders of the motor system that interfere with neurocognitive testing such as paralysis of both hands, (3) in state of post-traumatic amnesia, (4) prior medical history of traumatic brain injury and (5) inability to successfully perform the practice items for neurocognitive testing.

See page 16. Post-injury attentional function is the main study parameter. Four attentional networks will be assessed using the Attention Network Task (Rueda, 2004): alerting, orienting, executive and sustained attentional functioning. The first three networks will be studied in terms of quality (response accuracy) and efficiency (RT). Sustained attentional functioning will be studied in terms of performance over time and intra-individual variability.

See page 16. - Behavioural and emotional functioning will be assessed according to standardised administration of parents and teachers questionnaires. - Learning abilities will be assessed according to a computerised cognitive reinforcement paradigm: Probabilisitc Selection Task (Frank, et al., 2005) - Academic achievement will be recorded using CITO scores which are widely used in primary education. - Premorbid behavioural function will be assessed by requesting SDQ-questionnaire at the infant welfare centre.
