Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All (newly) diagnosed pediatric oncology patients, irrespective of the tumor type or its treatment Admittance for chemotherapy course as treatment of the malignancy Admittance for treatment of a suspected or proven infection

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Post-hoc exclusion may be applicable for the patients who are septic at the time of inclusion, because complement consumption may occur as a consequence of the overwhelming infection. On the other hand, complement defects may increase the risk of infections.

Determination of the prevalence of the complement defects in complement activation in pediatric oncology patients in relation to the type of malignancy (leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumor), oncological treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, or combinations hereof), potential loss or sequestration of complement factors [severity and duration of febrile neutropenia, proven infections, gastrointestinal complication, tumor lysis = estimated tumor mass] and potential lack of synthesis of complement factors [liver function, BM suppression].
