Age
18 Years to 99 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Age 30-70 years - Living in deprived neighbourhood - Dutch, Turkish or Moroccan ethnicity - Elevated waist circumference (>=94cm for men and >=80cm for women) - Sufficient fluency in the Dutch language

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Treatment for known hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus type 2, cardiovascular diseases and/or chronic renal failure (medication use) - High value for systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglycerides, total or LDL cholesterol - Any mental or physical disability that will hinder participation in the lifestyle intervention - Participation in another regular vigorous exercise and/or diet programme targeting weight loss - Pregnant or lactating

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcome is the change in waist circumference.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary outcomes are the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and the change in the values of the other components of the metabolic syndrome (fasting triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and glucose, and blood pressure). In addition other relevant risk factors for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney failure will be measured, i.e. HbA1c, BMI (weight and height), hip circumference, total cholesterol, body fat percentage and medication use.
