Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Dyads are eligible to participate in this study when: • there is a diagnosis of dementia (except fronto-temporal dementia); • they are community-dwelling; • they are able and willing to talk and think about the future; • there is some awareness and insight in the symptoms; • the family caregiver is the primary responsible person in the future, is well aware of the life of the person with dementia and is able to evaluate changes in the person with dementia; • the person with dementia and the family caregiver live nearby and have a close relationship, the caregiver should at least visit the person with dementia weekly (or more often); • the person with dementia has a score of 15 or higher on the MMSE (Mini-Mental State Exam; Folstein, Folstein & McHugh, 1975); • the dyad masters the Dutch language.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Dyads are excluded when: • The family caregiver or person with dementia receives psychological treatment that may interfere with the intervention (e.g. for depression and/or anxiety).
