Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age 14 or older 2. Ready for transfer from high to medium secure treatment unit 3. Expected stay at medium secure treatment unit is 6 months or longer 4. IQ > 70 5. five or more traits of personality disorders

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. accute psychotic symptoms 2. severe autism spectrum disorder

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1. improvement in behavior problems, personality pathology (early maladaptive schemas, schema modes, schema coping), and quality of life during stay at medium secure unit. 2. sustainment of improvement in these measures at 3- and 12-month follow-up.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. Change in therapist-reported schema modes during Schema Therapy sessions 2. Difference in treatment climate between Schema Therapy and TAU units
