Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: General inclusion criteria - Is over 18 years old. - Meets the ACSM inclusion criteria for maximal exercise testing (Thompson et al. 2013; Pescatello et al. 2014) Only applicable for people after stroke - Suffered a first or recurrent stroke, as diagnosed by a neurologist - Receives rehabilitation treatment care in Heliomare - Time since stroke between 7 days and 6 months at time of inclusion - Scheduled for a CPET as part of clinical practice - Functional Ambulation Category (FAC) 2 or higher, indicating that the patient is able to perform balancing and coordinating tasks with or without some assistance - For ambulatory activities; Berg Balance Score > 45 to limit fall risk during the activity - Able to understand instructions
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: A potential participant who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study: - Exclusion criteria for CPET as determined by the ACSM - Absolute contra-indications for exercise as determined by the ACSM - Cognitive or communicative disorders leading to inability to understand instructions or exercises - Non-stroke related sensory, motoric or orthopaedic disorders influencing movements of daily living - Non-stroke related disorders that influence aerobic load or aerobic capacity
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Experiment A - Aerobic load per activity, expressed as oxygen uptake in mlO2/kg/min - Relative aerobic load per activity, expressed as %peak oxygen uptake. Experiment B - Estimated relative aerobic load, expressed in %peak oxygen uptake. - Physical activity, expressed in intensity, duration and frequency of movement and number of steps per day - Fatigue, expressed as the score on the Fatigue Severity Scale | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Experiment A - Aerobic load per activity, expressed in heartrate and rating of perceived exertion - Average relative aerobic load per activity, expressed as * % maximal HeartRate, % HeartRateReserve and % Heart Rate at Ventilatory Threshold * % oxygen reserve and % oxygen uptake at Ventilatory Threshold * % maximal Rating of Perceived Exertion (%RPEmax) Experiment B - Participation, expressed in the value of the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation – Participation (USER-P). - Measured relative aerobic load based on heart rate monitoring in %HRR | — |
