Interventions

Patients will be weaned from the ventilator using a standard protocol and an early weaning protocol.

Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Planned and uneventful CABG; 2. Following receipt of verbal and written information about the trial, the patient must provide signed and dated informed consent before any trial related activity is carried out.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. History of any pulmonary disease; 2. History of any previous pulmonary surgery; 3. Valve surgery; 4. Arrival at the ICU with intra–aortic balloon pump, or inotropes at a more then usual rate (maximum dosages in ml per hour: dopamine [4], norepinephrine [4], dobutamin [4] or epinephrine [any rate]).

1. Duration of ventilation.

1. Length of stay in the ICU; 2. Number of failed extubations; 3. Number of ABG–analysis.
