Conditions

Wound Healing After Tooth Extraction

Brief summary

This study compares early healing after a non-surgical tooth extraction in adults. Participants are assigned by chance to one of three groups: cross-linked hyaluronic acid placed in the extraction site using a gelatin sponge; non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid placed using a gelatin sponge; or a gelatin sponge alone. The study team measures the wound area using photographs at the time of extraction and on days 3, 7, and 14. A clinician who does not know the assigned group also assesses healing. Participants report their pain and use of pain-relief medicine. The study compares healing among the three groups.

Interventions

DRUGCross-linked sodium hyaluronate 1%

Cross-linked sodium hyaluronate 1% applied locally to the extraction socket using a gelatin sponge after non-surgical tooth extraction.

DEVICENon-cross-linked low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid

Non-cross-linked low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid applied locally to the extraction socket using a gelatin sponge after non-surgical tooth extraction.

Gelatin sponge placed in the extraction socket without hyaluronic acid after non-surgical tooth extraction.

Inclusion criteria

* Age 18-45 years * Systemically healthy * Light smokers, instructed to abstain completely from smoking for the first 72 postoperative hours * Requiring simple posterior tooth extraction * Clinically achievable hemostasis

Exclusion criteria

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frameDescription
ercentage Reduction in Wound AreaPostoperative days 0, 3, 7, and 14Wound area will be measured from standardized, calibrated clinical photographs using ImageJ. Percentage reduction will be calculated relative to baseline: \[(baseline wound area - follow-up wound area) / baseline wound area\] × 100. Results will be compared among the three groups over time.

Secondary

MeasureTime frameDescription
Wound Healing Score (WHS)Postoperative days 3, 7, and 14Clinical wound healing will be assessed using the study's WHS, with a total score ranging from 0 to 9.
Index of Postoperative Recovery (IPR)Postoperative days 3, 7, and 14Postoperative recovery will be assessed using the IPR measure specified in the study protocol.
Postoperative Pain IntensityPostoperative days 1, 3, and 7Pain intensity will be recorded using a 10-cm visual analogue scale (VAS), where 0 indicates no pain and 10 indicates the worst pain.
Postoperative Analgesic ConsumptionPostoperative days 1-7The number of analgesic doses taken by each participant will be recorded in the postoperative medication log.
