Brief summary
Overweight and obesity, as well as periodontitis, are common public health problems with increasing prevalence. Both conditions may be linked through shared mechanisms involving chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. Numerous studies have reported an association between elevated body mass index (BMI) and periodontitis, particularly among younger and working-age populations. However, data regarding Thai adults under the age of 60 remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of high BMI and periodontitis among Thai adults aged 18-59 years and to identify factors associated with these conditions. The findings may provide useful information for improving awareness and supporting the prevention of both periodontal and general health problems in this population.
Detailed description
This cross-sectional study will be conducted among Thai adults aged 18-59 years attending the Dental Hospital, Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University (Phayathai Campus). Eligible participants will undergo anthropometric and periodontal assessments and complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Anthropometric assessment will include body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. BMI will be classified according to the Western Pacific Region (WPRO) criteria. Periodontal examination will include probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival index (GI), and plaque score. Periodontal status will be classified as clinical gingival health/gingivitis or periodontitis according to the 2017 AAP/EFP classification. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, medical conditions, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, and other health-related factors will also be collected. The study will examine the prevalence of high BMI and periodontitis and explore factors associated with these conditions in this population.
Interventions
Periodontal examination will include probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival index (GI), and plaque score. Periodontal status will be classified as clinical gingival health/gingivitis or periodontitis according to the 2017 AAP/EFP classification.
Information on sociodemographic characteristics, medical conditions, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, and other health-related factors will also be collected through the questionnaire.
Anthropometric assessment will include body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. BMI will be classified according to the Western Pacific Region (WPRO) criteria.

Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of Thai adults aged 18-59 years with high BMI, defined as BMI ≥25 kg/m², and periodontitis | At the time of study assessment (3 months) | Percentage of Thai adults aged 18-59 years with high BMI (BMI ≥25 kg/m²) and high BMI (BMI ≥25 kg/m²) with periodontitis. |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Factors associated with high BMI and periodontitis | At the time of study assessment (3 months) | Secondary Outcome 1: Prevalence of High Body Mass Index (BMI) Measure Description: Percentage of participants categorized as high BMI (BMI ≥25kg/m2). Participant weight in kilograms and height in meters are measured during the anthropometric assessment, and calculated to BMI Secondary Outcome 2: Prevalence of Systemic Health Conditions. Measure Description: Percentage of participants reporting specific systemic health conditions including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, chronic kidney disease, and hypothyroidism. Data are assessed using a questionnaire interview during the single study visit. Secondary Outcome 3: Distribution of Health-Related Behavioral Factors Measure Description: Percentage of participants classified by health-related behavioral factors, including current smoking status, alcohol consumption, and sleep behaviors. Data are collected via a questionnaire interview during the baseline visit. |
