Conditions

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Keywords

Muscle dysfunction, Proprioception, Pain, Cognitive impairment

Brief summary

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of sensorimotor function impairment according to disease stage in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and to determine whether functional differences exist between individuals with COPD and healthy controls.

Inclusion criteria

Individuals diagnosed with COPD, * Aged 40-65 years, who volunteer to participate in the study, * Who do not have additional musculoskeletal disorders, neurological or cardiorespiratory problems, or respiratory failure (not using long-term home oxygen therapy or non-invasive mechanical ventilation) will be included. Inclusion Criteria for Healthy Individuals: * Individuals aged 40-65 years who volunteer to participate in the study, * Who do not have additional musculoskeletal disorders, neurological or cardiorespiratory problems, * Who do not have communication problems will be included.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frameDescription
Montreal Cognitive AssessmentEnrollmentCognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The scale evaluates various cognitive domains, such as executive functions, visuospatial skills, attention, memory, language, abstraction, and orientation. The total score was calculated out of 30 points.
Pain Pressure Threshold and ToleranceEnrollmentPain threshold and pain tolerance were assessed using a digital pressure algometer (J-Tech Commander algometer, Preston Co., USA). Two measurements were taken from each site, and the mean value was used in the analysis.
Muscle Quality IndexEnrollmentMuscle quality was assessed using the Muscle Quality Index, calculated based on the duration of the 5-repetition sit-to-stand test, body weight, and leg length.

Secondary

MeasureTime frameDescription
Lower Extremity Coordination TestEnrollmentLower extremity coordination was assessed using the Lower Extremity Coordination Test, performed as a heel-to-toe tapping task. The test is repeated three times over a 20-second period, and the best result is used in the analysis.
