Brief summary

This study was conducted to compare four different methods applied to relieve thirst-related discomfort after surgery. The study is a prospective, randomized controlled, experimental research conducted at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Health Practice and Research Center General Surgery Clinic. The study took place between November 2022 and April 2023. 150 patients divided into control and intervention groups were included. The study aimed to investigate the effects of four different methods of quenching thirst after surgery on patient outcomes. Data collection tools include Patient Introduction and Follow-up Form, Numerical Verbal Scale (0 10) to measure thirst intensity, Safe Protocol for the Management of Early Post-Operative Thirst, Surgical Period Thirst-Related Discomfort Scale (CDSBRÖ), Perianesthesia Comfort Scale (PCS) and satisfaction level. Numerical Verbal Scale (0-10) was used to determine. The focus of the data study between groups was on postoperative thirst management, patient comfort, and satisfaction with different interventions. The significance level of 0.05 was taken as the criterion in interpreting the results.

Interventions

OTHERGroup 1: 5 ml slush slush (30 people)

Interventions were made on the number of people in the groups at the 30th minute, 50th minute, 60th minute, 80th minute, 120th minute and 140th minute after the surgery.

OTHERGroup 4: 40 C hot water spray hot water spray (30 people)

Inclusion criteria

* Patients between the ages of 18-60 * General anesthesia for at least 1 hour * Absence of open wounds in the mouth and lips * Patients who can express their thirst verbally and score 4 or more on the numerical verbal scale * Patients who voluntarily agreed to participate in our study

Exclusion criteria

* Presence of pain, nausea and vomiting at the time of data collection * Those with DM and Chronic Kidney Failure * Patients who need intensive care after surgery * Those who have absolute oral intake restriction for more than 24 hours before and after surgery

There are numbers between 0 and 10 on the scale. For example; '0' means I am not thirsty at all, '10' means I am very thirsty. Scores of the patients' discomfort experiences were obtained by asking the patients which number corresponded to the severity of their discomfort between 0 and 10.
Safety Protocol for Thirst Management in The İmmediate Postoperative Period20 minutes after surgeryIt is a protocol that determines whether oral water/ice can be administered to patients as a result of evaluating the patients' level of consciousness, airway patency, and nausea and vomiting in the early post-anesthesia period.
Surgical Period Thirst-Related Discomfort Scale30th minute, 50th minute, 60th minute, 80th minute, 120th minute and 140th minute after surgeryThe lowest possible score from the scale can be 0, and the highest score can be 12. The scale consists of 6 items. Each item is rated as 0 (did not bother at all), 1 (bothered a little), or 2 (bothered a lot).
Perianesthesia Comfort Scale3rd hour and 8th hour after surgeryThe scale consists of 24 items. It questions the individual's self-conception and feelings, which reflect the general thought process before and after surgery.
Numerical-verbal scale for evaluating satisfaction50th minute, 80th minute and 140th minute after surgeryScale numbered from 0 to 10 to measure satisfaction. 0 = dissatisfied, 10 = very satisfied.
