Brief summary

This randomized clinical trial aims to compare the efficacy of chlorhexidine and coconut oil in plaque-induced gingivitis patients. The study seeks to determine whether coconut oil pulling can provide comparable anti-plaque and anti-inflammatory effects to chlorhexidine mouthwash while producing fewer side effects. A total of 80 participants who diagnosed as plaque induced gingivitis will be randomly allocated into two equal groups (coconut and chlorhexidine). Clinical parameters, including Plaque Index and Gingival Index, will be assessed at baseline, day 7, day 14, and day 21 to evaluate changes in plaque and gingival inflammation following the interventions.

Interventions

Participants will use 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily for 21 days.

Participants will rinse with coconut oil once daily for 10-15 minutes for 21 days.

Intervention model description

Group A: CONTROL GROUP Participants will receive a 420ml(10 x42) ml opaque plastic bottle containing 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX). They will be instructed to rinse 30sec with 10ml of the solution after brushing twice daily (morning after toothbrush and at night after tooth brush) for 3 weeks . Group B: TEST GROUP Participants will receive a 210 ml(10x21) ml opaque plastic bottle with a solution for cold pressed 100% original coconut oil pulling. They will be advised to rinse with two teaspoons(5ml each) until their mouth is half-filled, then swish the oil left to right and front to back until it turns milky white and thin before spitting it out. This procedure will be done on an empty stomach in the morning for 3 weeks.
