Brief summary
This study evaluated whether a nurse-led lifestyle modification program combined with cognitive play-based training could reduce dementia risk among older adults living in residential care homes. A total of 134 older adults from seven residential care homes in Cairo, Egypt, participated in the study. Participants received either the multidomain nursing intervention or usual care. The intervention included education on brain-healthy lifestyle behaviors and cognitive play activities designed to improve cognitive health and reduce modifiable dementia risk factors. The study assessed dementia awareness, dementia risk using the Lifestyle for Brain Health Risk Assessment (LIBRA), cognitive function, nutritional status, depression, and physiological and anthropometric measures. The findings showed that participants who received the intervention had greater dementia awareness, lower dementia risk scores, and better cognitive screening outcomes than those receiving usual care, supporting the effectiveness of multidomain nurse-led interventions for dementia prevention.
Detailed description
Dementia is a major public health challenge, and many of its risk factors are modifiable. Lifestyle interventions addressing physical activity, healthy nutrition, cardiovascular risk factors, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation have demonstrated potential to delay cognitive decline and reduce dementia risk. Nurses are well positioned to deliver multidomain interventions that promote healthy cognitive aging among older adults residing in long-term care facilities.
Interventions
A structured nurse-led multidomain program consisting of lifestyle modification education and cognitive play-based training to improve brain health and reduce modifiable dementia risk factors.

This was an open-label, quasi-experimental study. Participants, care providers, investigators, and outcome assessors were aware of group assignment throughout the study.
Intervention model description
Participants were assigned to one of two parallel groups: an intervention group that received a nurse-led lifestyle modification and cognitive play-based program and a control group that received routine care. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and follow-up to compare the effectiveness of the intervention on dementia risk and cognitive health.
Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
* The participants had to be aged 60 years or above, be male or female, have risk factors for dementia (such as mild cognitive impairment, hypertension, or diabetes), and provide informed consent either directly or through a legal representative
Exclusion criteria
* advanced dementia (AMTS score ≤4) or severe neurological/medical conditions that might interfere with the intervention or outcome assessment
