Detailed description

The physical fitness and upper extremity endurance of children are fundamental for their optimal growth, development, and overall health. However, due to academic pressures and limited time to cover an extensive curriculum, physical education is often less investigated in school going children. This can adversely affect children's physical development. Incorporating structured, enjoyable, and engaging physical activities such as task-oriented basketball training can serve as an effective method to counteract this issue. Basketball, as a dynamic sport, not only enhances cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength but also specifically targets upper extremity use and functional endurance. By focusing on this approach, the current study aims to examine the significance of incorporating sport-based interventions into school routines to improve children's physical health among school children in Pakistan. This study aims to investigate how task- oriented basketball training affects the physical fitness and upper extremity endurance of school- going children in Lahore aged between 9 and 12. Data will be collected from City School, Johar Town Campus. The research will be based on randomized controlled trial design, involving two groups. One group will receive task-oriented basketball training, while the other group will receive the same basic intervention without the task-specific element. The study will be completed within 10 months, the training program will consist of organized basketball drills and activities designed to enhance upper extremity use, endurance, coordination, and overall physical fitness over a period of eight weeks. The Upper Extremity Functional Index (UEFI) will be used as the main tool to evaluate upper limb performance. Functional endurance will be measured through the medicine ball throw test, both before and after the intervention. Additionally, other physical fitness metrics including agility, flexibility, and grip strength will be assessed. Data will be analyzed through SPSS version 27.0

The Medicine Ball Throw Test is used to measure upper body strength and power, especially in the arms, chest, and shoulders. It checks muscle performance by measuring how far a person can throw a weighted ball.

Warm-up exercises such as stretching, jogging, and light movement drills.

Intervention model description

This randomized clinical trial will include 42 children aged 9-12 years from City School, Johar Town, Lahore. Participants will be randomly chosen and assigned to either a task-oriented basketball training group or a control group continuing regular physical education. The intervention will last 8 weeks, with assessments conducted pre- and post-intervention. The primary outcome will be measured using the Upper Extremity Functional Index (UEFI), while secondary outcomes include the medicine ball throw test, grip strength, agility, and flexibility.Data will be analyzed using SPSS version 27.0 to compare outcomes between groups.

* Children aged 9-12 years. * No history of serious injuries or chronic health conditions. * Parental consent to participate. * Both genders will be included

Exclusion criteria

-Any children with any other chronic neurological or medical condition. Specifically, children with Severe physical impairment Learning disability Below normal intelligence

The Upper Extremity Function Scale8 weeksThe Upper Extremity Function Scale (UEFI) will be adapted to measure children's arm strength, endurance, and ability to do daily tasks. It is a reliable questionnaire that checks how difficult everyday activities are when using the arms and hands. The scale has 20 questions, each scored from 0 (very difficult) to 4 (no difficulty), with a total score of 80 meaning full function. The tool will be tested on a small group first and then used before and after the training program to see any improvements.
